Mary Strand’s new romantic single, “Kiss Me At Midnight,” takes its inspiration from a tropical getaway from the winter in Minnesota.
Mary Strand, a novelist, lawyer, and songwriter, is experimenting with a variety of musical eras and rock styles on her forthcoming debut album.
Kiss Me at Midnight

“Kiss Me at Midnight,” Mary Strand’s fourth single, is a tribute to the Beach Boys.
Strand claims that she was “inspired by the sand and surf, wafts of smoke from Cuban cigars, mind-blowing Argentine cookies called alfajores, and of course the beach music playing everywhere” while on a two-year escape from Minnesota’s winter in South Beach, Florida. Her scribbled phrases were turned into a Beach Boys-inspired song a few months later.
When Strand and her album co-producers Ryan Smith and Mark Wade began working on the track, they decided to fully immerse themselves in the Beach Boys’ sound. They wanted to explore the harmonies, the instrumentation, and the basic musical approach of Brian Wilson and, in particular, the Pet Sounds album, Strand explained.
Strand sings lead vocals and plays guitar on “Kiss Me at Midnight;” Smith (of Soul Asylum and The Melismatics) plays guitar, sings, and plays Latin percussion; Wade, of The Melismatics, sings and plays bass; and Mary’s son Jack Strand on drums.

Golden Girl,
The album Golden Girl, which Strand will release on June 23, 2023, will include the single, “Kiss Me At Midnight.”
Like each of the tunes on the Golden Girl album, Strand’s fourth single investigates topics of affection – new and old, cheerful and not really – and “Kiss Me at Midnight” may be her most heartfelt tune on the collection. Even if those possibilities raise a few natural doubts, it’s all about exploring possibilities and new beginnings under a lush tropical canopy.
“Kiss Me at Midnight” will be delivered on all streaming platforms on April 21, 2023. Strand will celebrate by playing it live on Thursday, April 20, at Lyricists in the Round at the Stupendous Occasion Place in Northfield, Minnesota.
